2nd & 3rd Grade Art & Community

During art class students learned about different well-known artist who used flowers as their main subject. Students were then given the challenge of creating their own flower drawings.
Using soft pastels to draw flowers from real life takes a lot of patience, confidence and determination. These brave students took on the task with little hesitation, got their hands dirty and as a result created many fascinating works of art.

Nice job 2nd & 3rd graders!

Students work will be  on display at The CoffeeNook (a local coffee shop) for the next month for our community to view.

Pre K Vincent van Gogh Sunflowers

The Pre-K students were read Camille and the Sunflowers a story about Vincent von Gogh by Laurence Anholt. Camille, a young boy, makes friends with a lonely artist named Vincent. Where Camille lived, the sunflowers grew so high they looked like real suns. . .One day a strange man arrived in Camille's town. He had a straw hat and a yellow beard." So begins this fascinating tale of Camille, a little boy who is the son of a small-town postman. Camille meets the man with the yellow beard, and they become friends. This bearded man is a painter named Vincent van Gogh. The story, based on a true-life incident, is beautifully illustrated in full color by the author (amazon.com).

Students created their own sunflower drawings. For the inside circle of the flower we traced a roll of tape, we added texture by placing mesh underneath and rubbing a crayon on top. We added a stem with crayon and the flower petals with oil pastels.

2nd Grade Flower Still Lives

2nd Grade had the same challenge as 3rd grade: Drawing a flower still life

Students observed flowers in vases at each of their tables. Students used soft pastels on black construction paper to create their masterpieces. Charcoal was used in the background to clean up the edges. This work along with the 3rd graders will be on display at the CoffeeNook (a local coffee shop) for the next month. Nice job 2nd graders!

3rd Grade Flower Still lives

These students created still life drawings from flowers in vases. Students used chalk to layout their drawings, soft pastels to add color and charcoal to clean up the backgrounds on black construction paper. Very impressive for their first still life drawings!

Looking at the world from a different perspective

6th graders were introduced to one point perspective through some different drawing exercises. Once students grasped the concept of perspective drawing they created this project which is an optical illusion of a light at the end of a tunnel (or anything you choose it to look like!) Students were then asked to choose an inspirational quote. This project was created in early spring, I wanted the students to choose a quote that described hope, like spring or a light at the end of a tunnel.  The work is being shown in the front foyer with a sign that says "Looking at the world from a different perspective."

4th Grade Art & History

Hudson River School of Artist Inspired Drawings

4th graders spent quite some time in their classrooms learning about New York State. The study was brought into the art room through an exploration of the Hudson River Valley School of Painters. Students were each assigned a different artist to research in the computer lab and were required to find a painting by that artist to recreate. This was the first time using colored pastels for many students.
