5th Grade Apple Value Study

At the beginning of the school year 5th grade students were also introduced to the Elements of Art and the concept of value. Students first created value scales then drew spheres in their sketchbook and added value to them. Students were each given their own apple to study then draw. We discussed how important it is to include a highlight and shadow in your artwork to make it appear realistic.

At the end of the project students gathered for an art critique of their apples that were mounted on the wall outside their classroom.

4th Grade: Apples in a Basket

Students in the 4th Grade studied the concept of value and learned how to shade a sphere. Students learned how to weave paper and created a basket. Being that it is fall and our area has many apple farms students were each given a real apple to study. Students looked at their apples then rendered their red paper with highlights and shadows to create a realistic effect. 4th graders were very excited to be able to consume their juicy red-cort apples for lunch that day.
